Rare 4-hour Mirage

A mirage of a city lasts for four hours in China, "an image of a city, with modern high-rise buildings, broad city streets and bustling cars as well as crowds of people all clearly visible".

Is it really just mists randomly reflecting light or is it some sort of warp/portal to another time or place? The latter sounds much cooler.
