Statehood for Puerto Rico?
From Politico:
The president of the Puerto Rican Senate will lobby Congress this week for a bill that could lead to statehood for the Caribbean island -- even though Puerto Ricans have rejected statehood three times in the last 40 years.
Passage in Congress of the Puerto Rico Democracy Act would lead to the first congressionally authorized referendum on statehood in the territory's history.
Under the proposed measure, voters would first face an up-or-down vote on having a referendum. If that were approved, a subsequent vote would be held to decide whether Puerto Rico should become a state with full voting rights and responsibilities.
